Detroit is the most populous and largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city gave rise to the genres of Motown and techno, as well as playing a significant role in the evolution of jazz, hip-hop, rock, and punk music. Since the 2000s, conservation efforts have saved many architectural pieces and achieved several large-scale revitalizations, Eminem and his friend Proof lives in Detroit and was a set for 8 Mile.

History[]

The area was inhabited by Paleo-Indians 11,000 years ago. Huron, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Iroquois peoples lived in the area. By 1800, white settlers from Detroit were pouring westward into the. By 1773, the population of Detroit was 1,400, and by 1778, it had grown to 2,144. The region's economy was built around the lucrative fur trade, in which many Native Americans played important roles as trappers and traders. Today, Detroit's flag reflects its French colonial heritage.
